A NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTOR & WRITER

My own experience with anxiety is one of the main driving forces that inspired me to make ‘Frank.’ A lot of the time when watching films centred around representations of anxiety, I’ve found that people like to try and define anxiety as one singular thing, constraining it and making it one-dimensional. More often than not, the journeys of anxiety that are shown in film are wholly negative, but most people know this isn’t the case. Peoples’ struggles with anxiety are nuanced, complex, their journey’s aren’t linear, and their stories don’t all end with them set free of their anxiety forever.

Like most people, Ash’s journey isn’t linear. ‘Frank’ is about the peaks, the troughs and the plateaus of what it’s like to deal with anxiety. It’s about coming to terms with the nature of your mental health, making peace with it, and then learning to co-exist after that. Of course there will be those off-days, but you’re able to better understand yourself and grow as you go.

Frank is not as scary as he seems, just a bit more of a nuisance who knows how to say exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time (or right, if you look at it from Frank’s point of view). We want to present anxiety in a different way whilst also making it a film that the audience can find a part of themselves in, whether that’s in big or small ways. Their anxiety may not disappear, but that doesn’t mean it’s all doom and gloom.

We want people to watch this film and feel happier because of it.
